What Is the Trinity?
The Triune Godhead or Trinity is comprised of God, the Father; Jesus, the Son; and the Holy Spirit. The Great Commission charging us to take the message of the Gospel to the world says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19, ESV). This is just one reference to the role of the Triune God. Throughout Scripture, descriptive words are used to describe not only the role each member plays but also their relationship to us. The following names and selected Scriptures are only a partial list of their characteristics found in the Bible.

What are Some of the Titles and Roles of the Holy Spirit?
Less is known and understood about the Holy Spirit than about God the Father and Jesus the Son, but the role of the Spirit is no less powerful or important in the life of the believer today.

How Does the Holy Spirit Work Within the Trinity?
The Greek word perichoresis describes the relationship of the three persons of the Triune God. Peri means “around” and chorein means to “give way.” The triune nature of God works through the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as one. In John 14:26 we read, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” Jesus further comforts His disciples and us with this truth about the Holy Spirit: “When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you” (John 16:13-15). The three members of the Trinity work in unity.

How Does the Holy Spirit Guide Us in Our Walk with God?
Although the Holy Spirit is available to give direction in our lives, He will not override our free will or seize control of our minds. He works more like a combination of the GPS and the power steering of your car. He gives you the direction, but He doesn’t turn the steering wheel. He waits for your decision to follow Him, which you express by the act of turning the wheel in the direction He points. Once you do that, He provides the power to steer the car and move it down the road. The direction to the destination and the power to get there belong to the Spirit, but the decision to go forward remains with you. He is our Helper, Comforter, and Guide—the One who leads us into God’s truth.
