I have a keyboard that has the minus (-) sign as a default, lowercase character but the plus (+) sign as an alternative, uppercase character. So if I want to type the plus sign, I have to press the Shift key beforehand. This is quite annoying because in CK2, if I want to increase the game speed, I have to press Shift + the plus key to do so. But when I want to decrease the game speed, I don't need the Shift key and only have to press the minus key.
In CK2, you cannot change key bindings in the in-game Settings unless you use mods or modify the game files yourself. In CK3, however, is this still the case or is changing key bindings now a feature?

I've never used the keyboard to change speeds in CK, but most games that allow speed increase/decrease based on +/- use the keys without shift even if the + requires shift to use. Most keyboards (at least in the US) have the - key as "default" and the + is over the = (needing shift), but most games ignore that and although they say to use + for increasing speed, they are really using =. I don't see what CK should be any different. Have you tried increasing the speed without using shift? Maybe it works? As I said, I've never attempted using the keyboard for speed changes as I always run at max speed (or pause, which I do use spacebar for) and set that with the mouse when I first start a game.

Why would you want to change the shortcuts? If someone really wants to change the shortcuts they can just mod it themselves, no need to waste serious development time on something 1% of the user base will use. Going by the fact that Imperator you need to mod to change the shortcuts, it's probably the same for CK3.

Uhm, being able to remap keys is more or less an industry standard these days. It's actually quite shocking that people would make a game without that function.

Agreed. Though I personally don't have a need for remapping keys in CK, it is definitely an industry standard these days for PC games. It's one of the reasons I prefer PC over console... I can set the keys up however I want.

EU4 recently gained the ability to let you modify (most) key bindings in-game.

I don't change shortcuts because I prefer it, I change it because my keyboard has weird default keys that makes the gameplay experience worse. Standard keyboards have plus and minus signs as default keys, but my keyboard doesn't. Worse thing is, they're not even in the same case; one is default and one is alternative that you need the Shift key to activate. So using a core part of the game (game speed) feels clunky for people like me. To put it into perspective, here's an example: think about using WASD keys to move around the map. ASD keys are working fine and they work with one easy press, but the W key is different in that you also need to press Shift then W for it to work, just for the simple act of hovering your camera upwards.

I doubt this is something only 1% of the player base will use. Sure, it is only essential for the 1% people like me, but having the freedom to map the keys to your liking is just another QoL feature that I'm sure many players would appreciate. I also doubt that this feature is big enough that it requires their entire modding team to implement, or even significant enough to take up any development time whatsoever.

Well, I did check CK2 tonight and verified that even with what I'd consider a "standard" keyboard, you have to press the Shift key to increase speed (the + is over the =). I'd agree that such a requirement is really strange and shouldn't be set up that way for any reason. As I mentioned previously, normally if a game uses +/- for speed, it really uses = for + so that you don't need to use the shift key.

Because sometimes WASD is not as practical as you might think :

I'm temporarily disabled in one hand due to an accident and I wanted to set up the pause to one of the mouse buttons that are otherwise unused.

Bump this for all TKL users, where you don't have a numpad. I cannot think of any good reason to not include this feature in the game, ASAP.

Changing key bindings has been standard since the 90s on pc. Since you start playing in 867 that means you have to play for 1128 years (assuming 1995 as the target year) before you can research the tech. Historical accuracy is no fun...

BTW: The number keys are now also for changing speed. 1-5 is speed 1-5 respectively.
But yes, any PC game with more than two developers should have the feature to change keybindings. Otherwise: Very lazy. If you properly plan for it, this should not take up more than 0.1% of development time. More like 0.01%.

I'd be happy if they started by putting ALL of the games shortcut keys into someplace mod-able. Really annoying to assign commands to WASD and have the map move when you use them.
