Why you'll love this

This combo: cherries, walnuts, and yogurt. It's MAGIC. Super sweet cherries, nutty walnuts, creamy yogurt, and a bit of sweetness from maple syrup. It all just goes together so well. Superfoods and healthy fats that taste like dessert. HUZZAH!

Have you tried a raspberry walnut smoothie yet?

The cherry flavor is amazing! Oh, and there's no banana!

This recipe makes a large very cherry smoothie, about 16 ounces, but the recipe is easily adjustable so that you can make a large batch and keep it in the fridge for grab and go breakfasts.

What do cherries go with? Cherries are sweet, but full of flavor. They pair well with creamy yogurt, nuts, chocolate, cinnamon, and other summer produce.

Ingredients and equipment

Here's what you need to make a yogurt cherry smoothie at home! Full ingredients and instructions are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this article

Ingredients:

  • Plain yogurt. I like to use full fat yogurt or greek yogurt to make the smoothie extra creamy.
  • Cherries. Go for sweet dark cherries rather than tart cherries. Fresh or frozen cherries are fine.
  • Walnuts. Raw and unsalted if possible.
  • Maple syrup. Optional, but tasty!

Equipment:

  • High speed blender. A Vitamix is the best!
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Glass for serving. I like to use 16 ounce mason jars so I can pop a lid on and save any that I don't drink.
  • Spatula. Possibly for scraping the smoothie out of the blender.

Step by step instructions

This 4 ingredient cherry smoothie is super quick and easy to make. Here's how. Full instructions are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this article

  • Add the cherries, yogurt, walnuts, and maple syrup if using to a high speed blender.
  • Blend until very smooth.
  • Pour the smoothie into a large serving glass.
  • Enjoy!

Serving suggestions

Enjoy this smoothie as a healthy breakfast or a snack!

If serving for breakfast, I consider this recipe one serving. It's about 16 ounces, which is a large amount, but will keep you full.

If serving for a snack, I consider this two servings. One serving is 8 ounces.

To make it even more filling, add flax seeds, chia seeds, protein powder, or a handful of rolled oats to your smoothie!

Make it a smoothie bowl: Add the smoothie a large bowl and top with fresh cherries, fresh berries, sliced peaches, any fresh fruit of your choice, chopped nuts, flax or chia seeds, cacao nibs, cocoa powder, etc. So many options!

Recipe tips and substitutions

  • If you like banana in your smoothies, go ahead and add one! Better yet, add a frozen banana.
  • You can add some flax or chia seeds for added protein.
  • If you're using fresh cherries, add a handful of ice.
  • You can omit the maple syrup or swap it for your favorite sweetener.
  • Swap the walnuts for your almonds or your favorite nut butter if that's what you have.
  • Be sure to use sweet cherries and not pie cherries. I like frozen dark sweet cherries.
  • Make a vegan cherry smoothie by using your favorite plant based yogurt or coconut milk.
  • For a super sweet treat, swap the yogurt for vanilla greek yogurt.
  • If your smoothie is too thick, thin it out with a bit of water.
  • For a thicker smoothie, try adding more yogurt or frozen fruit (or a banana).

Make ahead, storing, and freezing

Make ahead: You can adjust the serving size in the recipe card to make a large batch of cherry smoothie for meal prep. After blending, pour the smoothie into your desired containers and store in the refrigerator until ready to grab and serve. Note: the smoothie will thin out as it sits in the fridge

Storing: Store any leftover smoothie in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Serve as is or thicken the smoothie with ice in a blender.

Freezing: To freeze for later, make the smoothie per the instructions and then freeze in a sealed freezer safe container for up to 3 months. Defrost in the refrigerator or blend in the blender before serving. The consistency may be grainy after freezing due to the yogurt.
